An Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court granted bail to human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and her husband, Hadi Ali, on Thursday. The couple was arrested earlier this week after a video showed them moving road barriers, an act which authorities claimed created a “security risk” during the England cricket team’s visit to Islamabad.
The Islamabad High Court also ruled against their three-day physical remand, sending them to judicial remand instead and questioning the necessity of physical remand for the alleged charges. Rights organizations like Amnesty International and the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan have condemned the arrests, labeling the charges as excessive and a violation of due process.
The incident has prompted a wave of support for Mazari, with many public figures denouncing the arrests as an example of the shrinking space for activists and human rights defenders in Pakistan
