Islamabad High Court Dismisses Prime Minister's Statement on Missing Persons, Calls for Accountability
During a hearing concerning Baloch missing persons, the Islamabad High Court delivered scathing remarks, asserting that the Prime Minister's statements hold no weight in the face of ongoing abductions. The court emphasized the need for accountability and adherence to the law by state institutions.
Presided over by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, the hearing was convened at the request of lawyer Iman Mazari, with Attorney General Mansoor Awan and the petitioner's lawyer in attendance. The Attorney General presented a report on recovered missing persons, prompting the court to address human rights violations highlighted in the petition.
Justice Kayani underscored the complexities of the missing persons issue, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that actions taken by law enforcement agencies adhere to legal standards. He expressed concern over the lack of accountability within agencies responsible for addressing such cases.
Lawyer Iman Mazari brought to the court's attention a disturbing incident where a Baloch student was abducted on the day the caretaker Prime Minister made an appearance. The student was subsequently released the following day in Rawalpindi.
Justice Kayani raised questions about accountability within agencies and stressed the need for regulation to prevent extrajudicial actions. He called for a transparent process of accountability akin to that of other regulatory bodies such as the FIA.
The court urged the federal government to engage the Ministry of Defense to establish mechanisms for self-accountability within agencies. Justice Kayani emphasized the importance of agencies operating within the confines of the law and cautioned against politicizing the issue of missing persons.
The hearing was adjourned until May 21, underscoring the court's commitment to addressing the urgent matter of missing persons and ensuring accountability within state institutions.
