In a recent session of the Islamabad High Court, Justice Mian Gul Hasan Aurangzeb expressed significant frustration towards Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) Judge Abul Hasnat Zulqarnain, accusing him of misconduct and raising concerns about the Ministry of Law's support for the judge.
During the hearing concerning the remand of Azam Swati, Justice Aurangzeb questioned the integrity of Judge Zulqarnain’s actions, stating, "We are not here to serve you, we are here to do justice." The division bench, which also included Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir, scrutinized whether cameras were available in Zulqarnain's courtroom, underscoring a lack of transparency in the judicial process.
Justice Aurangzeb highlighted past grievances, referring to injustices witnessed during the Cipher Trial and condemning the apparent political motivations behind Judge Zulqarnain's decisions. He asserted that the Ministry of Law seemed to be enabling the judge’s controversial actions, calling for accountability within the judicial system.
The court has adjourned the hearing until today, with Justice Aurangzeb demanding an immediate response from the inspection team regarding Judge Zulqarnain’s continued posting despite recommendations for his removal.
This controversy comes on the heels of Judge Zulqarnain's sentencing of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to ten years in prison in the Cipher case, further intensifying scrutiny on the conduct of the judicial system in Pakistan
