Israel Bombs Houthi Ports, Power Plant in Yemen; Rebels Retaliate with Missiles

The military conflict between Israel and the Houthi rebels in Yemen flared up again after Israeli forces launched airstrikes late Sunday on several Houthi-controlled sites, including three ports and a power station, prompting retaliatory missile fire from the Yemeni group.

The Israeli military confirmed it had struck the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Isa, and as-Salif, all situated along Yemen's Red Sea coastline. Additionally, the Ras Kathib power plant and a radar system on the Galaxy Leader, a ship seized by the Houthis, were also targeted. These are the first Israeli attacks on Yemen in nearly a month.

There were no immediate reports of casualties, although Houthi media outlets confirmed the attacks and reported brief skirmishes between air defenses and Israeli aircraft.

In retaliation, the Houthis fired two missiles toward Israel. Spokesman Yehyaa Saree claimed the group had targeted Ben Gurion Airport, Ashdod and Eilat ports, and a power station in Ashkelon.

“These strikes were in retaliation for Israeli aggression on Yemeni soil,” Saree declared in a video statement.

The Israeli military said efforts were made to intercept the projectiles, but the outcome remains under review. Emergency services reported no injuries or direct hits.

Context and Background

The Houthis, aligned with Iran and in control of large parts of northern Yemen, have escalated their missile and drone attacks on Israel and commercial vessels in the Red Sea corridor since the Gaza war began in 2023. The group says its actions are in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

Although the Houthis paused their attacks following a January ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, they resumed hostilities after U.S. airstrikes in Yemen in March that killed nearly 300 people.

A Houthi military source told Al Jazeera that the group’s air defenses used locally made surface-to-air missiles to force Israeli warplanes to retreat, with about 30 minutes of aerial confrontation reported.

Broader Regional Escalation

These strikes come at a tense time in the region, as the possibility of a Gaza ceasefire remains uncertain and Tehran considers resuming nuclear negotiations after U.S. air raids on Iranian facilities.

In addition to the Yemen conflict, Israel also conducted strikes on Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region, targeting alleged strategic weapons infrastructure and rocket launch sites. The November 27 ceasefire with Hezbollah has failed to halt such sporadic Israeli operations.

Over the past year, Israel has launched attacks not only in Gaza, but also in the occupied West Bank, Syria, Iran, and Lebanon, raising fears of a wider regional conflict.

The recent hostilities also follow a grenade and drone attack on a cargo ship in the Red Sea, which forced the crew to abandon the vessel. While no group claimed responsibility, the attack was consistent with Houthi targeting patterns, according to UK maritime authorities.

With tensions escalating on multiple fronts, analysts warn that any miscalculation could spiral into regional warfare, especially as diplomatic efforts to mediate a ceasefire remain fragile.
