Israel Dismisses Senior Military Officers Following October 2023 Hamas Assault

The Israeli military has taken unprecedented disciplinary action by dismissing several senior officers and censuring others for failing to prevent the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023, which sparked a devastating war in Gaza.

The list of generals formally removed from reserve duty includes former heads of military intelligence, operations, and the southern command overseeing Gaza. Despite these dismissals, the Israeli government has yet to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the attack.

Military Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir stated, “The IDF failed in its primary mission on October 7th – to protect the civilians of the State of Israel. This is a severe, resounding, systemic failure. The lessons of that day are numerous and significant, and they must serve as our compass for the future.”

Among those released were the previous heads of the intelligence and operations directorates and the southern command. The current intelligence director, who served as chief of operations during the attack, was censured but will remain in position until the end of his term in 2028 before voluntarily resigning. Other officers received formal reprimands, with some resigning voluntarily.

The Israeli air force and navy chiefs were also censured over lapses in defending against Hamas drones and paragliders during the assault.

The disciplinary measures come amid mounting public pressure. Thousands of protesters, joined by opposition leaders in Tel Aviv, have called for a state commission of inquiry into the October 7 attack. Two weeks ago, Chief of Staff Zamir called for a “systemic investigation,” though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far resisted launching a full-scale inquiry.

The October 7 attack killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and saw about 250 taken captive, according to official tallies. Israel responded with a two-year military campaign in Gaza, resulting in over 69,000 Palestinian deaths, according to local health authorities.

Last month, a US-brokered ceasefire was signed between Israel and Hamas. However, violations of the agreement have persisted, with ongoing Israeli attacks and accusations exchanged between the two sides. Authorities in Gaza have urged mediators—including Qatar, Turkey, Egypt, and the United States—to pressure Israel to halt its breaches, which have led to additional Palestinian casualties.
