Yemen's Houthi rebels launched a missile targeting Israel’s Tel Aviv-Jaffa area on Saturday, injuring 16 individuals. According to the Israeli military, the missile was launched from Yemen and was identified after sirens sounded across central Israel. Despite efforts to intercept the missile, the Israeli military confirmed that these attempts were unsuccessful.
The Houthis, who have claimed responsibility for the missile strike, stated that they had targeted a "military target" in the Jaffa district, which is located in Tel Aviv. Israel's emergency medical service, Magen David Adom (MDA), reported that the injuries were caused by glass shards from shattered windows in nearby buildings.
This attack follows an Israeli airstrike on Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and the port city of Hodeidah on Thursday, which resulted in at least nine casualties. These strikes came after the Houthis fired a missile toward Israel, which was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome system.
The Houthis, who have been increasingly active in the region, are aligning their actions with the Palestinian cause amid the ongoing war on Gaza. The Israeli assault on Gaza has resulted in the deaths of more than 45,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, since October 7, 2023.
The Houthis have vowed to continue their military operations until Israel's aggression against Gaza ceases and the siege is lifted. On December 9, a drone attack by the Houthis struck a residential building in central Israel, though no casualties were reported.
The conflict has seen Houthi forces targeting not only Israeli military infrastructure but also ships linked to Israel in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. In response, Israel and its allies, including the United States and the United Kingdom, have targeted Houthi positions in Yemen.
As tensions rise, the international community watches closely, hoping for a resolution to the complex and escalating conflict.
