Israel Imposes Siege on Tubas Governorate in West Bank, Conducts Raids

Israeli forces have sealed off large parts of the Tubas governorate in the northern Jordan Valley, sending heavy reinforcements into the area and imposing a sweeping siege on the region, local officials said on Wednesday.

Residents reported that military bulldozers blocked all access roads before dawn, while Apache helicopters fired rounds over empty fields surrounding Tubas. Troops then conducted house-to-house searches in Tubas city and four nearby towns, including Tammun and Aqqaba. Israel stated that the operation targeted resistance fighters, a claim dismissed by Tubas Governor Ahmed Asaad, who said the assault is motivated by geography rather than security.

“The assault is targeting Tubas for its location near the Jordan Valley, in a new effort to impose new realities,” Asaad said. He added that around 30 families had been displaced and several buildings on high ground had been seized.

Impact on Civilians

The siege has affected more than 50,000 Palestinians across the five towns. Schools and public institutions have been suspended, emergency committees activated, and movement of ambulances and medical teams restricted. Some patients requiring urgent care were denied access to hospitals, prompting local authorities to contact the International Committee of the Red Cross.

At least two Palestinians were hospitalized after being beaten by Israeli soldiers during raids in Tubas and Tammun, according to the Palestine Red Crescent Society.

Condemnations and Allegations

Hamas described the operation as part of a broader policy aimed at “crushing any Palestinian presence” and attempting to “ethnically cleanse” the West Bank. The Palestinian Mujahideen Movement denounced the raids as part of an “open war” to annex the West Bank, accusing the United States of enabling Israel’s actions.

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), nearly 7,500 raids have been conducted by Israeli forces across the West Bank this year, contributing to the worst displacement crisis in decades. Over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank over the past two years.

Human Rights Watch earlier this month warned that Israel’s mass displacement of Palestinians from refugee camps amounts to war crimes and crimes against humanity. UNRWA estimates nearly 32,000 Palestinian refugees have been forced from their homes in recent operations.
