WORLD NEWS

Tensions flared along the Lebanon-Israel border on Friday as Israel’s defense minister threatened Beirut following rocket fire from Lebanon, shaking the fragile truce that had largely ended over a year of hostilities with Hezbollah.
“If there is no quiet in Kiryat Shmona and the Galilee communities, there will be no quiet in Beirut either,” Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned, referring to the northern towns targeted by the rockets.
Rocket Fire and Israeli Retaliation
✔️ Israel’s military reported that two projectiles were launched from Lebanon.
✔️ One was intercepted, while the other fell in Lebanese territory.
✔️ The attack followed Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon, which killed six people, with Israel claiming they were Hezbollah operatives.
The Lebanese National News Agency reported Israeli artillery shelling in the village of Khiam, five kilometers from the border, as well as strikes on Kfar Kila and Hammamess Hill, where gunfire was heard.
Background: Cross-Border Conflict & Truce Violations
Hezbollah began attacking Israel on October 8, 2023, in support of Hamas, following the Palestinian group’s deadly attack on southern Israel that triggered Israel’s invasion of Gaza.
✔️ A November ceasefire led to an Israeli partial withdrawal, though it continues to hold strategic positions in southern Lebanon.
✔️ Israel has carried out intermittent strikes despite the truce, citing Hezbollah threats.
✔️ Last weekend, Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon killed eight people, marking the most intense escalation since the truce.
Under the ceasefire terms, Hezbollah was supposed to withdraw its forces north of the Litani River (30 km from the Israeli border) and dismantle its military infrastructure in the south. However, tensions have persisted.
Wider Conflict: Israeli Strikes Resume in Gaza
✔️ Israel has also resumed its invasion of Gaza, breaking a January ceasefire with Hamas.
✔️ In the past week, Israeli airstrikes have killed 855 people in Gaza, according to local health officials.
✔️ The UN warns that the renewed fighting has displaced 142,000 people in just seven days, as Israel blocks aid deliveries.
The conflict continues to escalate, with cross-border hostilities threatening to reignite full-scale war between Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
