An ice cream vendor in Istanbul’s bustling Beyoglu district has come under fire after a video surfaced showing him allegedly harassing a female tourist during a popular cone trick. The incident, which took place in front of an ice cream shop, has sparked widespread outrage on social media and prompted swift action from local authorities.
According to a report by Hurriyet, the vendor was performing the well-known Turkish cone trick — often a playful routine where the server teases customers by handing them an ice cream cone and pulling it away. However, the act took a disturbing turn as the vendor allegedly harassed the woman during the interaction.
The incident was caught on camera, showing the female tourist visibly uncomfortable as the vendor continued the trick inappropriately. The footage quickly went viral, leading to a public outcry.
In response, Beyoglu Municipality acted immediately. The ice cream shop was sealed, and its equipment removed.
“Beyoglu is a district where all women can walk safely, and we will take every measure to ensure it remains so,” Beyoglu Mayor Inan Guney said in a post on X, alongside a video showing police officials closing down the establishment.
Mayor Guney’s swift action was praised by many who demanded accountability and safer public spaces for women.
The incident also reignited conversations around street harassment, tourist safety, and accountability for small businesses that violate public decency.
The municipality has not yet confirmed whether legal charges will be filed against the vendor, but officials have pledged a zero-tolerance policy for such behavior in public places.
