Jailed PTI Leaders Urge National Reconciliation Amid Regional and Economic Crises

Five senior leaders of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) — Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr. Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, and Omar Sarfraz Cheema — have called on the Pakistani government to urgently reassess its approach to national challenges, warning that immediate reconciliation is critical for the country’s stability.

The statement, issued from Kot Lakhpat jail through their lawyer, cited multiple pressing concerns facing Pakistan. The leaders highlighted the resurgence of terrorism by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, strained relations with Afghanistan, and the recent US-Israel attacks on Iran amid ongoing negotiations, along with Tehran’s retaliatory measures, as destabilizing the region.

They also pointed to advancing ties between India and Israel as a “serious threat” to Pakistan, while rising oil and gas prices following Middle East hostilities could undermine the country’s recent macroeconomic gains. “Tensions in the Gulf states will negatively influence remittances and the investment climate. Public anger and outrage, resulting in loss of lives, is a serious concern,” the leaders said, referencing deadly protests after the assassination of Iran’s supreme leader.

The PTI leaders warned that “business as usual is no longer possible” and stressed the urgent need for the government to reconsider its policies to safeguard Pakistan’s economy, security, and stability.

Water management issues were also highlighted. The leaders criticized India’s decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty and invest in water storage projects on the Jehlum and Chenab rivers, noting Pakistan’s internal lack of consensus on water initiatives as “alarming” and potentially devastating for the agrarian economy.

Concluding their statement, the PTI leaders emphasized that Pakistan cannot afford delays: “We do not have the luxury of time anymore; we must reconcile immediately. National reconciliation is the need of the hour.”
