Judicial Commission Formed Under 26th Constitutional Amendment: PTI and Ruling Alliance Nominate Members

In a significant development regarding judicial appointments, the ruling alliance and the opposition have nominated members for the newly formed Judicial Commission under the 26th constitutional amendment. The commission is set to oversee the appointment of judges, a crucial function in maintaining judicial integrity and independence.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Umar Ayub as the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly and Shibli Faraz to represent the party in the Senate. PTI founder Imran Khan, currently detained in Adiala Jail, approved these nominations after consultations with legal advisors Barrister Gauhar and Salman Akram Raja.

On the ruling side, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Senator Irfan Siddiqui have been proposed as representatives. The commission will consist of 13 members, including two from the government and two from the opposition, along with several senior judges of the Supreme Court and other legal representatives.

The commission will be chaired by the Chief Justice and will include the most senior judge from the constitutional bench, three senior judges from the Supreme Court, the Federal Minister of Law, the Attorney General, and an advocate with at least 15 years of experience nominated by the Pakistan Bar Council.

Additionally, the commission will also include a woman qualified as a technocrat or a non-Muslim member for a term of two years. The Judicial Commission is tasked with determining the composition of constitutional benches and will play a pivotal role in ensuring the appointment of qualified judges in the country’s judiciary.
