A senior police officer who was critically injured during a controversial raid in connection with the Mustafa Amir murder case has succumbed to his wounds after battling for his life for several months.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ahsan Zulfiqar was shot during a raid conducted on February 8, 2025, at a residence in DHA’s Khayaban-i-Momin. The operation, carried out jointly by the Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) and the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), was aimed at apprehending the main suspect, Armaghan Qureshi.
According to Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Asad Raza, DSP Zulfiqar sustained bullet injuries during an exchange of fire allegedly initiated by the suspect. He remained under treatment at a private hospital for months, but his condition deteriorated due to a severe infection that spread through his wounds.
Police sources revealed that the raid was “poorly planned,” highlighting serious lapses in coordination. Local police were reportedly not informed prior to the operation and only arrived at the scene after gunfire had already erupted.
The death of DSP Zulfiqar has reignited concerns over operational preparedness and decision-making within law enforcement agencies. Funeral arrangements for the fallen officer will be announced later, officials said.
The incident is tied to the high-profile murder case of 23-year-old Mustafa Amir, who was allegedly kidnapped and killed by his acquaintances, Armaghan Qureshi and Sheraz alias Shavez Bukhari, on January 6, 2025, in Karachi’s Defence Housing Authority (DHA).
Investigators claim the suspects placed Amir’s body in the trunk of his vehicle and later set it ablaze in the Hub area of Balochistan in an attempt to destroy evidence. Both accused have denied the charges in court.
A final charge sheet against Armaghan Qureshi was submitted in August 2025, while an Anti-Terrorism Court formally framed charges against both suspects last month. The case remains ongoing, with hearings continuing as witnesses are summoned.
The murder case had previously triggered disciplinary action within the police department. Three junior officers, including the Darakhshan Station House Officer (SHO), were suspended and demoted over what authorities described as “unprofessional conduct” during the investigation.
At the time, then Sindh Inspector General Ghulam Nabi Memon defended senior officials, citing operational challenges and limitations faced during the early stages of the probe.
Separately, on January 5, a Karachi judicial magistrate had granted Armaghan Qureshi post-arrest bail in a case involving an illegal call centre and alleged credit card data theft.
The death of DSP Zulfiqar adds a tragic dimension to an already high-profile case, raising fresh questions about accountability, planning, and the risks faced by law enforcement personnel in the line of duty.
