Over 5,500 police personnel have been deployed across Karachi today to ensure the security of 8th Muharram processions, as authorities nationwide ramp up preparations for Ashura, which falls on Sunday.
According to Karachi police, a total of 5,543 officers and personnel have been stationed for security duties, particularly around the central procession. The deployment includes 4,957 constables and head constables, senior officers, and special police snipers. Additionally, 586 NGO volunteers are assisting with crowd control and safety.
The city is hosting 829 processions and 5,227 majalis during the first 10 days of Muharram, prompting heightened vigilance. A statement from the Karachi police urged citizens to stay alert and report suspicious activity immediately via the Madadgar 15 helpline.
To manage traffic, the Karachi Traffic Police (KTP) has issued a comprehensive plan. Processions from Nishtar Park to Hussainiya Iraniyan Imam Bargah will follow their traditional routes. MA Jinnah Road will remain closed from Guru Mandir to Tower, and vehicles providing sabeel or niaz will enter from Tower/Memon Mosque.
Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon confirmed that 49,662 police personnel will be deployed across Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad from 8th Muharram until Ashura. This includes 14,546 officers for majalis security and 35,116 for processions. An additional 14,000 personnel have also been assigned.
Meanwhile in Lahore, Rescue 1122 has finalized preparations for 9th and 10th Muharram. According to spokesperson Farooq Ahmad, over 12,000 rescue workers will be active across Punjab, with 815 ambulances, 2,166 motorbikes, and 316 fire/rescue vehicles mobilized.
Rescue 1122 Secretary Dr Rizwan Naseer said more than 1,350 personnel will be deployed in Lahore alone, including 55 ambulances, 300 motorbikes, and 44 fire and emergency vehicles. Over 1,000 additional rescue posts will be set up at sensitive locations, monitored by the Provincial Monitoring Cell.
Dr. Naseer stressed that all district officers would remain vigilant and mark alternative rescue routes to ensure timely response. "Any laziness or negligence will result in immediate disciplinary action," he warned.
Citizens have been advised to dial 1122 via mobile app, landline, or PTCL in case of any emergency.
As Muharram reaches its peak, law enforcement and emergency agencies across Pakistan remain on high alert to ensure the safety of mourners and maintain peace during the religious processions and gatherings.
