Karachi Likely to See Rain, Thunderstorms as Westerly Wave Sweeps Sindh

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain and thunderstorms in Karachi starting Thursday, with similar weather conditions expected across various districts of Sindh throughout the week.

According to the PMD’s daily weather outlook issued on Wednesday, a westerly wave is currently affecting the southern parts of the country and is expected to expand across most regions. Under its influence, Karachi will experience partly cloudy weather, with temperatures ranging between 32°C and 34°C during the day and dropping to around 24.5°C at night. There is also a possibility of light rain or drizzle in certain areas of the city.

Humidity levels are expected to remain high, reaching up to 84% in the morning before falling to 45–55% in the evening. Winds are likely to blow from the west and southwest.

On Thursday, the weather is expected to turn mostly cloudy, with chances of rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms in isolated areas. Temperatures may range between 31°C and 33°C during the day, while nighttime temperatures are expected to hover between 23°C and 25°C. Humidity is forecast to stay between 75% and 85%, accompanied by continued westerly winds.

Friday is likely to bring a brief break from wet conditions, with mostly sunny skies and temperatures rising again to 32–34°C. However, the PMD has indicated that cloudy weather with intermittent rain and thunderstorms could return over the weekend, particularly on March 28 and 29.

The impact of the westerly wave will not be limited to Karachi. Several districts across Sindh, including Ghotki, Larkana, Sukkur, Hyderabad, and Mirpurkhas, are expected to receive rain, windstorms, and even isolated hailstorms between Wednesday and Sunday, with occasional gaps.

The PMD has warned that strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms could pose risks during this period. Weak structures such as electric poles, billboards, and solar panels may be vulnerable to damage. Additionally, lightning strikes could occur in isolated areas.

Farmers have also been advised to take precautionary measures, as standing crops may be affected by hail and strong winds.

Earlier this week, the PMD had already predicted widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from March 24 to 30 due to the incoming weather system. The warning comes in the wake of a recent severe thunderstorm in Karachi that resulted in multiple casualties, underscoring the need for public caution during unstable weather conditions.

Residents are advised to stay updated with official forecasts and take necessary safety measures as the weather system develops.
