Karachi Motorcyclist Fatally Struck by Dumper as Heavy Vehicle Accidents Surge

A tragic road accident in Karachi claimed the life of a motorcyclist on Monday when a dumper truck operated by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board struck him in the Nagan area of the city.

According to police, the deceased, identified as Hameedur Rehman, was riding his motorcycle under the Nagan bridge when the dumper crushed him to death. Witnesses said people at the scene caught the dumper driver, Allah Rakha, and beat him before police arrived and took him into custody. The victim’s body was transported to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for legal formalities.

New Karachi Station House Officer (SHO) Mohammed Saud noted that the accident occurred at a spot without CCTV coverage. Eyewitnesses indicated that Rehman may have been riding on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.

The incident comes amid a concerning rise in heavy vehicle-related accidents across Karachi. Hospital data from 2024 shows that nearly 500 people have died and 4,879 have been injured in traffic accidents caused by reckless driving, construction activities, and other hazards.

Several recent incidents highlight the danger posed by dumpers and tankers:

  • On November 4, citizens set a dumper on fire after it killed a man and injured his wife.
  • On October 12, a dumper driver with a fake license smashed into six vehicles, including three Edhi Foundation ambulances, killing one person and injuring two.
  • On August 10, two siblings were killed and their father injured by a dumper near Lucky One Mall, prompting a mob to set seven trucks on fire.
  • August 15 saw multiple accidents, including a water tanker killing a four-year-old boy in Orangi Town, and a fast-moving dumper hitting a couple in Sultanabad.

Authorities and road safety experts have repeatedly warned about the dangers of reckless heavy vehicle operations, particularly in densely populated areas. The recent spike in incidents has sparked calls for stricter licensing, enforcement of traffic laws, and better monitoring of construction and waste-management vehicles.
