Karachi Police have announced a strict crackdown on vehicles with fake or hidden number plates, following the introduction of the e-challan system that has reportedly reduced traffic accidents by 50 percent.
DIG Traffic Police Pir Muhammad Shah, speaking on Geo News’ morning show Geo Pakistan, stated that individuals using fake number plates are committing a criminal offence and should face legal action, including imprisonment. He emphasized that accidents can occur anywhere, but the use of fake plates poses additional risks and undermines traffic enforcement efforts.
He also clarified that a fine will be imposed on vehicles displaying fake or obscured number plates, as part of the ongoing efforts to ensure road safety.
The announcement follows a press conference by Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, who, along with the CPLC Chief and DIG Traffic, highlighted improvements in the city’s traffic system since the implementation of e-challans. According to police data, nearly 100,000 e-challans have been issued so far, contributing to improved compliance with traffic regulations.
The police chief also confirmed the launch of a large-scale campaign to identify and penalize vehicles with fake number plates, aiming to strengthen law enforcement and ensure safer roads in Karachi.
Authorities urge citizens to adhere to traffic rules and register their vehicles correctly to avoid penalties and legal consequences.
