Karachi Traffic Crackdown: Hefty Fines, One-Way Ban & Vehicle Fitness Rules Announced

The Sindh government has introduced sweeping reforms to curb growing traffic violations in Karachi, including massive fines for wrong-way driving, a complete ban on 4-seater rickshaws, and mandatory fitness checks for all vehicles.

The decisions were taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Home and Law Minister Zia Lanjar, with the IG Sindh, Secretary Law, and Secretary Transport in attendance.

🔴 Key Highlights:

·       Heavy Fines for Wrong-Way Driving:

o   Government vehicle: Rs 200,000

o   Private car: Rs 100,000

o   Motorcycle: Rs 25,000

·       Strict Penalties for Stunts:

o   One-wheeling & drifting: Rs 100,000 (1st offense), Rs 200,000 (2nd), Rs 300,000 (3rd)

·       Fitness Certification for All Vehicles:

o   Mandatory through third-party testing

o   Permission required to bring rickshaws on roads

·       Ban on 4-Seater Rickshaws:

o   Complete prohibition to ensure safety standards

·       Vehicle Tracking & Surveillance:

o   Minimum 5 cameras to be installed on freight vehicles

o   Trackers and sensors mandatory in water tankers and dumpers

·       Licensing Enforcement:

o   Motorcycle without license: Rs 25,000 fine

o   Car without license: Rs 50,000 fine

·       Bans on Vehicle Modifications:

o   Tinted glasses, fancy lights, and illegal exhaust systems (hotters) will no longer be allowed online or in shops

·       Digital Traffic Enforcement:

o   E-challans to be sent to home addresses of vehicle owners

o   Traffic, transport, and excise systems to be integrated

o   No ownership transfer of vehicles until fines are cleared

·       Judicial Support:

o   A dedicated Traffic Magistrate will be appointed for swift resolution of traffic violation cases

Minister Zia Lanjar stated that these measures are part of a broader initiative to restore order on Karachi's roads, ensure public safety, and bring discipline to commercial and private transport systems.

“This isn't just a fine – it’s a message. The roads are not a playground,” Lanjar emphasized.

The draft amendment to the Motor Vehicles Rules will be presented to the Sindh Cabinet for final approval.
