Karachi University Flooded on Eid as Major Water Pipeline Bursts, Exposing KWSC Infrastructure Failures

As the city battled a worsening water crisis over the Eidul Azha holidays, a burst in a 36-inch water supply line at Karachi University added to the misery, flooding the road leading to the university’s graveyard and exposing the crumbling state of Karachi’s water infrastructure.

The damaged line submerged parts of the campus in ankle-deep water, severely affecting the cemetery’s access — a location frequently visited during Eid for grave visits. Citizens were forced to wade through stagnant water to pay respects to their loved ones, a deeply rooted tradition during religious festivities.

Residents of the Karachi University staff colony expressed frustration, saying they had informed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) of the leakage in time, but no immediate action was taken. "Had the water utility responded quickly, we could have avoided both the water wastage and the ordeal on Eid days," one resident lamented.

This isn’t the first such failure by the KWSC. In April, an 84-inch pipeline near the university also burst, causing widespread flooding across academic and residential zones on campus. The repair then led to over 10 days of water shortages in various parts of the city.

Commenting on the latest incident, KWSC Chief Engineer Water Trunk Main (WTM) Syed Muhammad Ijaz confirmed a leakage in the joint of a 36-inch diameter line. “The repair work has started and will be completed soon,” he assured.

He clarified that the line affected supplies only to Scheme 33 and the citywide water distribution would remain uninterrupted. “Water was supplied to Scheme 33 on Sunday night, and the next cycle is due Thursday as scheduled,” Ijaz added.

The official further stated that the repair was being conducted on an emergency basis with a technical team on-site to restore functionality as quickly as possible.

Despite the official assurances, this latest episode has reignited public criticism over the KWSC’s outdated and unreliable water infrastructure, particularly during critical periods like Eid.
