KP CM Ali Amin Gandapur Resigns on PTI Founder’s Orders; Sohail Afridi Named Successor

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur has announced his resignation, stating that the decision was made on the direct instructions of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan.

In a statement released Wednesday, Gandapur said, “I am resigning from the post of Chief Minister on the orders of the PTI founder. Sohail Afridi will continue to have my full support and backing. We will move forward together for the release of our leader and the party’s policies.”

The announcement comes after PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja confirmed to the media that it had been decided to remove Ali Amin Gandapur from his position and nominate Sohail Afridi as the new Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Raja explained that the decision was made following a detailed review of the province’s situation, including a surge in terrorism and governance challenges. “This is Imran Khan’s decision, and the background has been explained — the deteriorating security situation in KP, with our soldiers and officers martyred in Orakzai today, demanded a reset,” he said.

He further added that the federal and provincial governments were at odds over policy responses to terrorism. “We believe the only solution is dialogue. Sohail Afridi is expected to engage with the federal government constructively and protect the lives and property of the people.”

Raja emphasized that the change was part of PTI’s “new policy and new beginning.” “The founder of PTI has ordered Ali Amin to step down, and we believe this is the right time for change. The assembly will soon elect Sohail Afridi as the new Chief Minister.”

Sohail Afridi, the designated Chief Minister, belongs to Khyber district and was elected to the Provincial Assembly from PK-70. He has been an active member of PTI’s youth wing, serving as President of the Insaf Students Federation KP for several years.

Afridi previously held key roles in the provincial government — first as Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Communication and Works, and later as Minister for Higher Education after a cabinet reshuffle.

His appointment marks a significant political shift in PTI’s provincial leadership as the party seeks to restructure its governance approach amid increasing security challenges and internal party reorganization.
