Kurram DC Injured in Convoy Attack, Aid Delivery Temporarily Halted

The situation in Kurram remained tense but "under control" on Saturday after Deputy Commissioner (DC) Javedullah Mehsud was injured in an armed attack on a convoy near Bagan. The convoy was transporting aid to the region to alleviate hardships caused by an over 80-day road blockade.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government spokesperson Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif confirmed the incident, calling it a “sinister conspiracy” by unknown assailants to destabilize the area just days after a peace agreement was signed between warring factions in the region.

Efforts for Peace and Relief
The recent peace agreement followed weeks of negotiation to end violence stemming from decades-old land disputes. The clashes claimed at least 130 lives and led to severe food and medicine shortages due to blocked roads.

Barrister Saif assured that security forces had taken control of the situation, with arrangements being made to resume the convoy's movement after a clearance process. DC Mehsud was initially treated at Alizai Hospital before being airlifted to Thall Combined Military Hospital (CMH) for surgery. Officials confirmed that his condition is stable.

Political Condemnation and Call for Unity
The incident drew widespread condemnation from political and government leaders.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the attack, describing it as an attempt to sabotage the peace agreement. “Those who disrupt law and order and harm humanity will not succeed. The government and security forces are actively working against terrorists,” he said.

President Asif Ali Zardari called for strict action against miscreants, emphasizing the need to thwart their efforts to spread chaos. KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur termed the attack a “deliberate and nefarious attempt” to derail peace and pledged strict legal action against those responsible.

“The provincial government is determined to restore peace in Kurram and address the challenges faced by its people,” Gandapur said.

Relief Efforts Amid Cold Weather
Despite the incident, relief operations continued as the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) dispatched 17 truckloads of supplies to Kurram. The aid included essential items such as tents, blankets, solar lamps, and medical kits to help residents cope with extreme cold.

Naik Muhammad Khan, advisor to the provincial government for relief and rehabilitation, assured transparent distribution of aid and reiterated the government's commitment to victims' rehabilitation.

Protests and Local Demands
While aid efforts resumed, protests against road closures and demands for compensation for property damage continued in parts of Kurram. A sit-in outside the Parachinar Press Club persisted, with organizers urging the government to ensure the region’s roads remain open and secure.

Appeal for Peace
Barrister Saif appealed to both Sunni and Shia factions in Kurram to remain calm and avoid falling prey to conspiracies. “The people must unite to identify miscreants and support efforts to deliver aid and maintain peace,” he said.

The provincial government remains focused on restoring peace and ensuring aid delivery as it navigates the challenges of rebuilding trust and stability in the conflict-hit region.
