Lebanon Warns of Possible Partial Israeli Withdrawal as Deadline Approaches

With the deadline for the Israeli military’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon fast approaching, Lebanon’s government has raised concerns that Israel may not fully meet the agreed deadline of February 18. Tensions continue to mount as small-scale attacks persist between the Israeli military and the Lebanese group Hezbollah, threatening the fragile ceasefire that has held since late November.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun expressed his worries, saying, “We are afraid that a complete withdrawal will not be achieved tomorrow.” His statement came amid reports of Israeli drone attacks, including a strike on a car in Sidon, which resulted in the death of a Hamas official, and a drone drop in Kfarchouba that caused destruction in the region.

Human rights groups, like Human Rights Watch, condemned Israel's actions, including the destruction of civilian homes in southern Lebanon, complicating the return of many displaced residents.

Under the terms of the November ceasefire agreement, Israel was to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon over a 60-day period, with a final deadline of February 18. However, Israel has indicated it will not fully pull out, instead leaving troops in five strategic locations. Lebanon has rejected this move, and officials have warned of the military implications for control over southern Lebanon.

Some reports suggest that the US has tacitly agreed to extend the withdrawal period, with Israel reportedly retaining key hilltop positions inside Lebanese territory. The issue has sparked diplomatic tensions, especially as Lebanon calls for the full implementation of the withdrawal agreement.
