The football world was plunged into mourning on Thursday following the tragic death of Portugal and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother Andre Silva, 26, in a devastating car crash near Zamora, Spain.
According to emergency services in the Castille-Leon region, the crash occurred shortly after midnight when the car burst into flames. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene. While authorities have not officially confirmed the identities, police told Reuters that all evidence pointed to the victims being Jota and his younger brother.
Liverpool FC “Devastated” by Loss
In a heartfelt statement, Liverpool FC confirmed the tragic news, saying,
"The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre."
The club has requested privacy for the family and pledged full support during what it called “an unimaginable loss.”
Jota had only recently celebrated his wedding to long-time partner Rute on June 28, just days before the tragedy.
Career Highlights
Jota joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite at Anfield. He scored 65 goals in 182 appearances across all competitions and was instrumental in helping Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup.
Internationally, Jota was capped 49 times for Portugal and was a two-time UEFA Nations League winner.
UEFA has announced that a moment of silence will be observed at all Women's Euro 2025 matches on Thursday and Friday in memory of Jota and his brother.
Tributes Pour In
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro called the death “unexpected and tragic,” saying Jota “greatly honoured Portugal’s name.”
The Portuguese Football Federation described Jota as “a fantastic player and an extraordinary person,” mourning the loss of “two champions.”
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said:
“Thoughts are with everyone of their family and friends, especially his wife Rute and their three lovely kids.”
Midfielder Ruben Neves shared an emotional tribute:
“They say that we only lose people when we forget them. I will never forget you.”
Clubs across Portugal, including FC Porto and Sporting CP, joined the chorus of condolences, remembering both brothers for their contributions on and off the pitch.
A Legacy Remembered
Diogo Jota was more than a world-class footballer — he was a devoted husband, a father, a brother, and a role model to many. His sudden death has left a void in football that words can scarcely fill.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the globe, the legacy of Diogo and Andre will live on — in stadiums, in memories, and in the hearts of those they inspired.
