The investigation into the recent jailbreak at Malir Jail has taken a new turn, with officials now confirming that 225 prisoners managed to escape, not 216 as initially reported. This revelation came to light following a recount conducted by prison authorities.
A formal letter written by the jail superintendent to the investigating authorities acknowledged the revised count. According to the letter, 146 escapees have been recaptured, while 79 prisoners remain at large. The updated list of escaped prisoners has been shared with all police stations across Karachi.
Police have intensified their crackdown and launched targeted raids across various districts. A disturbing update from law enforcement revealed that one escaped prisoner committed suicide at his residence in Maripur, while another was killed during a shootout as he attempted to evade arrest.
The police breakdown of captured prisoners by district is as follows:
· Malir District: 107 arrests
· Korangi District: 8 arrests
· East District: 7 arrests
· South District: 7 arrests
· City District: 3 arrests
· Kemari District: 3 arrests
· West District: 8 arrests
· Central District: 6 arrests
The incident has triggered serious questions regarding the security and management of Karachi’s prison system. Investigations are ongoing, and further action against jail staff or facilitators may follow.
The authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious individuals and assured that all remaining fugitives will be brought to justice. The police have also increased surveillance and coordination with intelligence agencies to track down those still at large.
This massive jailbreak and its aftermath mark one of the most significant prison security failures in recent years, drawing sharp criticism from civil society and political observers alike.
