Public outrage is growing in the United States following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good, 37, by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer in Minnesota. The incident has raised questions about the use of force by federal immigration agencies and the exclusion of local authorities from the investigation.
A newly released 47-second video, initially published by Minnesota-based Alpha News and later shared by the Department of Homeland Security, captures the final moments of Good’s encounter with ICE officer Jonathan Ross, 43, who opened fire on Wednesday.
The footage shows Ross approaching and circling Good’s SUV while apparently filming on his cellphone. Good’s wife, Becca Good, was also recording the incident, and exchanges can be heard between the parties. At one point, Good attempted to reverse and then steer her car, after which Ross fired, causing the vehicle to crash into other parked cars.
President Donald Trump’s administration defended the ICE agent, labeling Good a “domestic terrorist” and stating that Ross, an Iraq War veteran, acted in self-defense. Critics have argued that the video does not clearly show the shooting moment or the car’s movement prior to the shots fired.
Local authorities have expressed deep concern over being excluded from the investigation. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized federal officials, stating, “The fact that Pam Bondi’s Department of Justice and this presidential administration has already come to a conclusion about those facts is deeply concerning.” Frey stressed that the state’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension should be involved in the probe.
Good was reportedly the fourth person killed by ICE agents since the Trump administration intensified immigration enforcement efforts last year. Becca Good told local media that they were at the scene to “support our neighbours” and were armed only with whistles.
The incident has sparked protests across Minneapolis and other US cities, with hundreds gathering at federal facilities to demonstrate against immigration enforcement practices. Organizers have planned weekend protests nationwide.
A separate fatal shooting by a Border Patrol agent in Portland, Oregon, on Thursday has further inflamed tensions, drawing criticism of federal immigration policies and calls for accountability.
