In a defiant stand against Myanmar's military junta, a resistance group has announced that its fighters successfully repelled an attempt by junta troops to advance on the strategic town of Myawaddy along the Thai border, which was seized by rebels last week.
Saw Taw Nee, spokesperson for the Karen National Union (KNU), revealed in an interview that reinforcements of junta forces had been attempting to advance on Myawaddy for days but were met with strong resistance. He emphasized that the KNU's forces effectively thwarted the junta's efforts through strategic blocking and interception tactics.
While independent confirmation of the KNU's claims is unavailable, Nee's statements shed light on the ongoing conflict in the region. The border town of Myawaddy, recently liberated from military control by a coalition of anti-junta forces led by the KNU, remains a focal point of contention.
According to Nee, clashes between resistance fighters and junta troops occurred between the villages of Kawkareik and Kaw Nwet along the main Asian Highway 1 leading west from the Thai border. The KNU spokesperson also provided insights into the toll of casualties inflicted on the junta forces, estimating approximately 100 deaths and injuries.
The resistance movement in Myanmar, born out of widespread discontent against the military coup in 2021, has evolved into a nationwide armed struggle. This movement now operates in coordination with established ethnic rebel groups, posing a significant challenge to the military's authority across the country.
Nee emphasized the importance of coordination among various anti-junta factions while acknowledging the challenges of working within a broad coalition. He underscored the immediate concern for the KNU: the welfare of over one million displaced people within its territories, calling for international support, including from neighboring Thailand.
As the conflict in Myanmar persists, Nee urged the junta to heed the recent setbacks as a signal to relinquish power and prioritize the will of the people. He emphasized the urgency of the moment, urging swift action for the restoration of democracy in Myanmar.
