The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has appointed Advocate Javed Arshad as the special prosecutor to lead proceedings in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding the appeals and sentence suspension pleas filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the controversial £190 million case.
According to a formal notification issued with the approval of NAB Chairman, the appointment is intended to expedite the legal process in a case that has become central to the legal troubles facing the former prime minister and his wife.
Court Had Earlier Adjourned Hearing
The Islamabad High Court had earlier this month adjourned the hearing on the couple’s applications seeking suspension of their convictions, allowing NAB time to appoint a prosecution team.
The bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice Sardar Sarfaraz Dogar and Justice Muhammad Asif, was told by Imran Khan’s lawyer Barrister Salman Safdar that they had awaited the hearing date for weeks and emphasized the urgency of the suspension plea.
"After vows, wishes, and prayers, we finally got today’s date. It was not easy," Safdar remarked in court.
Despite his request for immediate proceedings, the court adjourned the hearing, granting NAB additional time to finalize its legal representation.
Background of the £190 Million Case
Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were convicted earlier this year by an accountability court in connection with a corruption reference involving £190 million that was allegedly laundered through a settlement deal with a UK property tycoon. NAB alleges the money, which was meant to be repatriated to Pakistan, was misappropriated.
The conviction led to prison sentences for both Khan and Bushra Bibi, prompting their legal team to file appeals for both overturning the convictions and suspending the sentences.
The Islamabad High Court is now expected to resume hearing the appeals, with Javed Arshad leading the prosecution’s arguments on NAB’s behalf.
Next Steps
With the special prosecutor now officially appointed, legal observers anticipate that the IHC may resume hearings shortly, possibly within the coming days. The case is being closely watched given its implications on Imran Khan’s political future and the broader accountability narrative in Pakistan.
