Authorities are investigating a weekend incident near the official residence of Zohran Mamdani in New York City, where an improvised explosive device (IED) was thrown during a protest, as an Islamic State-inspired act of terrorism, according to the NYPD.
Two men, identified as Emir Balat and Ibrahim Kayumi, were arrested in connection with the incident and are expected to face charges in criminal court. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the attack is being treated as ISIS-inspired and is not linked to the ongoing Iran conflict.
No injuries were reported during the event, which occurred during a small protest led by far-right influencer Jake Lang, opposing public Muslim prayer in New York. Lang’s demonstration drew approximately 20 participants, while a counter-protest attracted about 125 people.
According to police, Balat threw two jars wrapped in tape and filled with nuts, bolts, and screws, one of which was packed with TATP explosives, near a line of police officers. Witnesses reported seeing flames and smoke as one of the devices flew through the air and struck a barrier.
Kayumi was arrested for allegedly handing Balat one of the devices. On Sunday, the police bomb squad inspected a car connected to the men, finding a suspicious device that tested negative for explosives.
Mayor Mamdani was not home during the incident. Lang returned to the scene on Monday during a briefing by Commissioner Tisch.
The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities monitoring potential ties to extremist networks and ensuring public safety around the area.
