Pakistan has agreed to International Monetary Fund (IMF) conditions aimed at incorporating climate change considerations into the selection of development projects. By August 2026, 30% importance will be given to climate change in project selection, aligning with global sustainability goals.
The decision follows the carbon tax implementation and marks Pakistan's acceptance of all IMF conditions related to climate change. A transparent and clear system will be developed to assess the environmental impact of upcoming projects.
Additional IMF Conditions Accepted
- Project Transparency: All projects with a budget exceeding Rs 7.5 billion will now be posted on the PC1 website for public access.
- Government Grants and Subsidies: The country has also agreed to better monitor government grants and subsidies related to climate-sensitive projects.
These steps are part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to secure IMF support and address climate-related challenges while focusing on sustainable development.
