Pakistan and Afghanistan Upgrade Diplomatic Ties, Exchange Ambassadors

Pakistan and Afghanistan have agreed to upgrade their diplomatic missions by exchanging ambassadors, marking a key milestone in efforts to normalize bilateral ties after years of tension and mistrust.

Following Pakistan’s recent decision to elevate the status of its chargé d’affaires in Kabul to ambassador, Afghanistan’s foreign ministry welcomed the move and announced the reciprocal promotion of its chargé d’affaires in Islamabad, Sardar Ahmad Shakeeb, to ambassador. This development was confirmed by the Afghan Foreign Ministry via its official social media channel.

Sources also revealed that Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi is expected to visit Pakistan in the coming days, signaling further diplomatic engagement.

Pakistan’s chargé d’affaires Ubaidur Rehman Nizamani, who has served in the post since November 2022, will also be upgraded to ambassador. Ambassador Nizamani brings decades of diplomatic experience, having served in key positions in Washington, New Delhi, Dhaka, Berlin, and Jeddah.

This diplomatic upgrade follows a trilateral meeting hosted in Beijing by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, where China facilitated discussions between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and itself. China’s role as a bridge-builder has been widely acknowledged by experts, including Senator Mushahid Hussain, chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute, who highlighted China’s pivotal role in fostering peace and stability in the region.

The agreement to exchange ambassadors was part of a broader consensus to deepen cooperation and expand the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to include Afghanistan, thereby fostering economic integration and regional connectivity.

Afghan academic Dr. Ubaidullah Burhani emphasized the importance of using this diplomatic opening to foster direct, constructive dialogue between Islamabad and Kabul, urging both countries to focus on practical cooperation in areas such as trade, healthcare, and education.

The normalization of diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan marks a hopeful step toward addressing longstanding issues and building a foundation for lasting peace and regional stability.
