Pakistan Condemns India’s Ban on Kashmiri Political Groups

Pakistan on Wednesday strongly denounced India’s decision to declare two political organizations in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK) as "unlawful associations," calling it an attempt to stifle political dissent in the region.

According to a statement from the Foreign Office (FO), the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has designated the Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee (AAC) and the Jammu and Kashmir Ittihadul Muslimeen (JKIM) as unlawful associations for the next five years. The AAC is led by prominent cleric and Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, while JKIM was founded by Maulana Mohammad Abbas Ansari, who led the party until his passing in 2022.

The FO expressed grave concern over the move, noting that it adds to a growing pattern of political suppression in IOJK. Last year, several other Kashmiri political groups were also banned, bringing the total number of outlawed parties to 16.

“Banning different political parties and organizations is yet another manifestation of the Indian authorities’ iron-fisted approach in IOJK. This move is a blatant attempt to suppress political activities and silence Kashmiri voices,” the FO statement read.

The Pakistani government urged India to lift restrictions on Kashmiri political organizations, release all political prisoners, and implement UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir.

Additionally, Pakistan rejected recent remarks made by Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, who claimed that the Kashmir dispute would be resolved once the “stolen part of Kashmir” under Pakistani administration is returned. The FO dismissed these claims as baseless and reiterated its stance that India must withdraw from IOJK in accordance with international law.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was previously placed under house arrest for over four years following India’s 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status. His detention, along with those of other Kashmiri leaders, sparked widespread criticism from human rights organizations.

Pakistan reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination and vowed to continue highlighting India’s actions on international platforms.
