Pakistan Fight Back After England’s Jamie Smith Anchors with 89 in Rawalpindi Test

The opening day of the series-deciding third Test in Rawalpindi provided fans with a gripping contest as 13 wickets tumbled on a dry, spin-friendly pitch. England, batting first, posted 267, largely thanks to Jamie Smith’s impressive rearguard 89, after being reduced to 110-5 at lunch.

Pakistan spinner Sajid Khan was the standout performer, claiming six wickets for 128 runs, while Noman Ali provided key support with figures of 3-88. Despite England’s lower-order resistance, Pakistan fought back in the final session, ending the day at 73-3, trailing by 194 runs.

On a pitch offering significant turn from the start, Sajid and Noman exploited the conditions, with all but one wicket falling to spinners. England’s Jamie Smith led the resistance with six towering sixes and five boundaries in his 119-ball knock, helping his side recover after an early collapse. Smith and Gus Atkinson (39) added a crucial 105-run partnership for the seventh wicket, stabilizing England’s innings.

For Pakistan, Abdullah Shafique was dismissed for 14 by Shoaib Bashir, while Saim Ayub fell to Jack Leach for 19. Gus Atkinson claimed the only wicket for a fast bowler, removing Kamran Ghulam for three.

With the match finely poised, both teams will look to seize control on day two as Pakistan captain Shan Masood (16*) and Saud Shakeel (16*) continue the home side’s fightback.
