The commissioning ceremony of the Pakistan Navy’s first Hangor-class attack submarine (PNS Hangor) was held in Sanya, China, marking a significant milestone in the country’s naval modernization program.
The event was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, who served as the chief guest, along with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and senior naval officials from Pakistan and China.
According to official statements, President Zardari termed the induction of the submarine a historic step in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defense capabilities, reaffirming the country’s commitment to maintaining a “robust, balanced, and credible defence posture.”
The Hangor-class submarines are equipped with advanced weapons systems, modern sensors, and air-independent propulsion technology, allowing longer underwater endurance and enhanced operational capability. These features make them a key asset for safeguarding Pakistan’s maritime interests and sea lines of communication.
Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf highlighted that increasing disruptions at critical maritime choke points pose risks to global trade and energy security, emphasizing the need for technologically advanced naval forces to maintain regional stability.
He further noted that the Hangor-class submarines will play a vital role in deterrence, maritime security, and protection of economic lifelines in the Arabian Sea and the broader Indian Ocean region.
The program is part of a broader Pakistan-China defense cooperation project, under which a total of eight submarines are planned, with some being constructed in China and others in Pakistan under technology transfer arrangements.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and senior military leadership also congratulated the Pakistan Navy on achieving this milestone, calling it an important step in strengthening national defense capabilities.
