Pakistan to Send Two Astronauts for Training in China, Making Space History

Pakistan is set to send two astronauts for training in China, marking the first time a foreign country will participate in Beijing’s space station training program. The announcement was made on Friday by Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) Director Shafaat Ali.

Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Pakistan signed a strategic agreement with China, allowing Pakistani astronauts to receive specialized training. Candidates will be selected purely on merit, with the eligibility criteria including PhD holders, experienced pilots, and graduates meeting specific physical standards.

China Opens Its Space Training Program to Pakistan

Ali emphasized that this collaboration is a milestone for Pakistan’s space ambitions, as China had previously reserved astronaut training solely for its citizens. “This marks a new era of friendship between Pakistan and China, expanding cooperation beyond economic and defense sectors into advanced space exploration,” he said while speaking to a private news channel.

The selection process for Pakistan’s astronauts will be rigorous and completed in three phases, ensuring only the most qualified individuals participate. The process is expected to conclude by 2026.

Scientific Research and Space Mission Objectives

The selected astronauts will be part of advanced scientific experiments conducted at China’s space station (CSS). Their research will cover a wide range of fields, including:

  • Biological and medical sciences
  • Aerospace technology
  • Applied physics and fluid mechanics
  • Space radiation and microgravity studies
  • Ecology and material sciences
  • Astronomy and cosmic research

Pakistan’s participation in these scientific studies is expected to enhance its capabilities in space exploration and contribute to global advancements in science and technology.

A Historic Leap for Pakistan’s Space Program

Suparco Director Ali expressed gratitude to both the Pakistani and Chinese governments for this opportunity, calling it a "giant leap" in Pakistan’s space journey. “This collaboration not only strengthens Pak-China ties but also paves the way for Pakistan’s future missions in space exploration,” he stated.

With the astronaut selection process underway, Pakistan is now closer than ever to entering the global space race, setting the stage for future missions beyond Earth’s orbit.
