Pakistan Urges Diplomacy and Dialogue Following North Korea's Latest Ballistic Missile Launch

In response to North Korea’s recent ballistic missile launch on Monday, Pakistan has expressed its deep concern and called for renewed diplomatic engagement to address the escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
The missile test coincided with the visit of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to Seoul, where he met South Korea’s Acting President, Choi Sang-mok, highlighting the sensitive timing of the launch. North Korea's missile was identified as a new intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile (IRBM), which Pyongyang claims is equipped with a hypersonic glide vehicle. The launch has raised alarms about its implications for regional and global security.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Munir Akram, addressed the UN Security Council on Thursday, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic dialogue and urging the revival of talks between the relevant parties. Akram condemned North Korea's missile tests, stating that they are detrimental to both regional and international peace and security.
“Provocations such as missile tests and threats must end,” Akram stated firmly, reaffirming Pakistan’s position against further nuclear weapons testing. He reiterated Pakistan’s long-standing commitment to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and called for the full implementation of UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions and global disarmament goals.
While the missile launch had no immediate impact on neighboring countries' security, the South Korean military reported detecting the projectile and identified it as an intermediate-range ballistic missile. UN officials have expressed concern over North Korea’s continued missile program, warning that it undermines global non-proliferation efforts. Khaled Khiari, the Assistant Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, highlighted that North Korea had failed to issue necessary safety notifications for airspace and maritime boundaries, a violation of international norms.
North Korea’s Ambassador to the UN, Song Kim, defended the missile test, stating it was a necessary step for strengthening the country’s national defense and strategic deterrent. Kim warned that any physical conflict on the Peninsula would be a result of what he termed "reckless actions" by the United States and South Korea. He also urged the UN Security Council not to criminalize North Korea’s actions, accusing the international body of applying double standards in its treatment of the country.
As tensions rise on the Korean Peninsula, Pakistan's call for diplomatic engagement and dialogue remains crucial in efforts to mitigate the risks of further escalation.
