POLITICS & POLICY MAKING

Pakistan has raised alarm over the growing militarization of artificial intelligence (AI) and called on the global community to prevent it from becoming a new domain of arms competition.
Addressing the United Nations Disarmament Commission, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed, stressed that the use of AI in the military sphere poses serious risks to regional and global stability.
“The integration of artificial intelligence into military systems could spark dangerous new arms races and severely destabilize the security landscape,” Ambassador Ahmed said during his remarks. He warned that such developments could escalate tensions and potentially lead to conflicts with unpredictable consequences.
Ambassador Ahmed highlighted the urgent need for the international community to establish frameworks to ensure the responsible and peaceful use of AI technologies, especially in defense and military sectors.
He further emphasized that nuclear disarmament should remain the top priority on the global disarmament agenda. “Efforts to eliminate the threat of weapons of mass destruction must not be overshadowed by emerging threats,” he added.
Pakistan’s intervention comes amid growing international concerns about the unchecked development and deployment of autonomous weapon systems and AI-driven military technologies by several advanced nations.
Experts and peace advocates have echoed similar concerns, warning that the lack of global regulations around military AI could lead to a new era of automated warfare with severe humanitarian consequences.
