Pervez Khattak Testifies Against Imran Khan in £190m Corruption Case; PTI Leader Challenges NAB Appeals

RAWALPINDI: As former prime minister Imran Khan faces a jail trial in the £190 million corruption case, former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Pervez Khattak testified against him before an accountability court on Wednesday.
Before parting ways with PTI to form the now-defunct PTI-Parliamentarians, Mr. Khattak was a key PTI leader, serving as defense minister in Mr. Khan’s cabinet. He claimed the cabinet had approved a confidential deed to transfer money, seized by the UK, to Bahria Town owner Malik Riaz.
Mr. Khattak testified that the £190m seized by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) as proceeds of crime were allegedly returned to Malik Riaz with the federal cabinet's approval. He mentioned that in December 2019, then-accountability adviser Mirza Shahzad Akbar produced the confidential deed in a sealed envelope for cabinet approval, refusing to disclose its contents despite requests from some cabinet members.
Before Mr. Khattak, several individuals close to the ex-premier have testified in various cases involving Mr. Khan. His secretary Azam Khan testified in the cipher case, and aide Aun Chaudhry recorded his statement in the Iddat case.
During the testimony, Mr. Khan, usually passive during such statements, rose from his chair to approach the witness box, observing his former comrade turned witness.
The case alleges that Mr. Khan and Bushra Bibi obtained significant sums and land from Bahria Town Ltd to legalize the amount through the federal cabinet.
Despite several prosecution witnesses, including Zubaida Jalal, Nadeem Afzal Chan, and former principal secretary Azam Khan, not appearing, the defense counsel chose not to cross-examine Mr. Khattak, stating they would do so jointly when all witnesses are present. The next hearing is scheduled for July 13.
