In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the prime minister commended the dignified participation of Pakistanis, including Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, Mazhar Saeed Shah, Wahaj Ahmed, Dr. Osama Riaz, Ismail Khan, Syed Aziz Nizami, Fahad Ishtiaq and others in the flotilla, which set sail to deliver humanitarian aid to famine-stricken people in Gaza.
“This initiative represents the peaceful aspirations of the Pakistani people, the struggle for justice, and the spirit of helping those in need,” Sharif said. He added that the government stands by the principles of human dignity, safe humanitarian access, and unhindered assistance.
The premier also emphasized that Pakistan demands the safe and early return of its citizens from the flotilla, which has been intercepted by Israel.
Israeli Seizure of Flotilla
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, all boats in the flotilla—comprising more than 40 vessels carrying nearly 500 people—have been seized by the Israeli navy. Those onboard are being transferred to Israel for eventual deportation to Europe.
The Israeli military surrounded the flotilla on Wednesday night and reportedly used water cannons against several boats.
International Figures Onboard
The flotilla includes a diverse group of activists, politicians, and humanitarian workers from across the world. Among them is former Pakistani senator Mushtaq Ahmed and climate activist Greta Thunberg, who joined the mission in solidarity with Gaza.
Background
The Global Samood Flotilla was launched as part of international efforts to break the blockade of Gaza and provide food and medical supplies to Palestinians facing dire shortages due to the ongoing humanitarian crisis.
Human rights groups have condemned the Israeli interception, calling it a violation of international humanitarian law.
Prime Minister Sharif reiterated that Pakistan will continue to support humanitarian principles and advocate for the rights of oppressed people worldwide.
