PM Shehbaz and Field Marshal Asim Munir Arrive in Tehran for Funeral of Assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei
Detailed Report
-
The High-Level State Visit: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Friday, July 3, 2026. The high-level Pakistani leadership is visiting the Iranian capital to attend the funeral ceremonies of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The late supreme leader was assassinated alongside several family members and senior military advisers—including his adviser Ali Shamkhani—during a heavy U.S.-Israeli military strike on February 28.

The Broader Delegation: According to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the high-powered diplomatic entourage includes a broad spectrum of Pakistan's political leadership. Accompanying the Premier and the Army Chief are National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, PPP Secretary General Nayyer Bukhari, and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah. Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani also landed in Tehran earlier in the day with a separate legislative delegation. The Pakistani leaders were received by Iranian state officials and Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who was already stationed in Tehran to handle bilateral coordination.

The Geopolitical Context: The public funeral ceremonies are commencing now after a lengthy delay caused by the height of the recent Middle East war. The ceremonies are taking place under a fragile, newly established ceasefire between Iran and the United States, brokered under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to halt active regional hostilities. Pakistan joins several international delegations, including high-level representatives from China, Afghanistan, and various Caucasus neighbor states, traveling to Iran for the event.

The Funeral Trajectory: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that a massive public turnout during the procession would serve as a "decisive response" to foreign aggression, terrorism, and bullying, while showcasing internal national unity. The body of the late Supreme Leader will lie in state starting Saturday at the central Friday prayers complex in Tehran. Mirroring the ideological, religious, and political pillars of the Islamic Republic, the multi-day funeral procession will travel through a series of key spiritual and political hubs, moving from Tehran to the holy cities of Qom, Karbala, Najaf, and finally to Mashhad for burial. Following the conclusion of his state visit to Iran, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is scheduled to depart directly for Turkiye.
