Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in Riyadh on Tuesday to participate in the One Water Summit, a global initiative co-hosted by Saudi Arabia, France, Kazakhstan, and the World Bank. The summit, taking place on December 3-4, focuses on addressing critical water issues, including pollution, scarcity, and water-related natural disasters.
The event, part of the One Planet Summit initiative, was announced during the 2023 UN Climate Change Conference and runs concurrently with the 16th session of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.
PM's Call for Action
In a post on X, PM Shehbaz emphasized the importance of collective strategies to tackle water security.
“Together, we aim to accelerate action to combat desertification, address water pollution, and advocate for local, regional, and global action. Let’s unite in our pursuit for water sustainability,” he wrote.
Key Activities
During the summit, the Prime Minister will:
- Deliver a keynote address at a roundtable to highlight Pakistan’s initiatives to mitigate water scarcity, enhance climate resilience, and conserve biodiversity.
- Engage in bilateral meetings with international leaders to strengthen Pakistan’s global partnerships.
Diplomatic Engagements
PM Shehbaz’s visit marks his third trip to Saudi Arabia in recent months, reflecting deepening ties between the two nations.
- In November 2024, he attended the Arab-Islamic Summit, emphasizing regional collaboration.
- In October, he participated in the Future Investment Initiative (FII), promoting economic and technological cooperation.
A Regional and Global Priority
Welcomed by Riyadh Deputy Governor Prince Muhammad bin Abdul Rehman bin Abdul Aziz, the Pakistani delegation includes Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi, and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Ahmed Farooq.
The summit aims to bring nations together to implement solutions for:
- Combating desertification.
- Improving global water quality.
- Enhancing water resilience in the face of climate change.
