PML-N Azad Kashmir Calls for Immediate Elections Amid Deepening Constitutional Crisis

The constitutional and political crisis in Azad Jammu and Kashmir has entered a critical phase, with the top leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Azad Kashmir demanding immediate general elections and the restoration of all constitutional bodies.

At a joint press conference held in Muzaffarabad, former AJK Prime Minister Raja Muhammad Farooq Haider Khan, along with Secretary General Chaudhry Tariq Farooq, Vice President Ms. Noreen Arif, Secretary Information Barrister Iftikhar Gilani, and Secretary Finance Dr. Mustafa Bashir, expressed grave concerns over the paralysis of constitutional institutions in the region.

Speaking to the media, Raja Farooq Haider warned that the absence of key institutional roles—including that of the Chief Election Commissioner and the Senior Member of the Election Commission—had rendered the Election Commission of Azad Kashmir practically dysfunctional. "Only one member is currently functioning," he revealed, "which has severely impacted the commission's ability to operate effectively."

He also criticized the performance of the AJK Legislative Assembly, noting that sessions are not being conducted in line with constitutional mandates. “This is not governance; this is a breakdown of the rule of law,” Farooq Haider said, warning that if corrective measures are not taken soon, Azad Kashmir could descend into serious political turmoil.

The PML-N leadership unequivocally demanded transparent general elections in the last week of October 2025, stating that the people of Azad Kashmir deserve the right to choose their representatives in a fair manner. “No pre-poll rigging will be tolerated,” they declared, adding that all constitutional institutions, especially the Election Commission, must be made functional immediately.

The leaders proposed the formation of a consensus-based action plan, involving all political parties in the region, and the creation of a fact-finding commission to investigate the current government's actions. “This commission should uncover the truth behind the administrative collapse and hold those responsible accountable,” said Barrister Iftikhar Gilani.

The press conference highlighted a growing sentiment among opposition parties that the current political climate is unsustainable. The PML-N’s urgent call for elections and institutional restoration could mark the beginning of a new political movement in Azad Kashmir aimed at restoring democratic norms and constitutional order.
