President Zardari Grants 180-Day Pardon for Prisoners on Eid Milad-un-Nabi

President Asif Ali Zardari has approved a special pardon of 180 days (six months) for prisoners across Pakistan on the auspicious occasion of Eid Milad-un-Nabi (PBUH).

According to a statement issued by the Presidency, the pardon was granted in consultation with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif under Article 45 of the Constitution of Pakistan, which empowers the President to grant pardons, reprieves and remissions.

The federal cabinet had initially recommended a 100-day remission, but following mutual consultation between the Prime Minister and the President, it was extended to 180 days.

The statement clarified that the pardon will only apply to eligible prisoners as defined by law. It will not be applicable to convicts involved in murder, terrorism, treason, espionage, or major financial crimes.

Officials described the decision as a humanitarian gesture, meant to mark the blessed occasion of the Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) birth anniversary. The move is also expected to reduce overcrowding in prisons and provide deserving inmates a chance at rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

Legal experts say that such pardons are traditionally granted on national and religious occasions, but the extension to six months this year reflects the government’s attempt to address both humanitarian and systemic challenges in Pakistan’s prison system.
