Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif Orders Punishment for FBR Officers Making Weak Cases, Pushes for Fast-Track Resolution

Islamabad – Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has taken decisive steps to address the issue of weak or incorrectly filed cases by Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) officers. In a review meeting held on FBR’s revenue performance and pending cases, Prime Minister Sharif directed that officers who file cases on unsound or erroneous grounds be punished, while those who pursue cases with integrity and diligence would be rewarded.

The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of swiftly resolving all revenue-related cases. He also underscored the need for engaging reputable lawyers to handle these cases to ensure their effectiveness. Shahbaz Sharif highlighted that significant reforms were already underway in the FBR, with promising outcomes being seen as a result of these changes.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister was briefed on the status of pending cases in various courts. From July to December 2024, a total of 586 cases were disposed of in the High Court, and 637 cases were resolved in the Supreme Court. However, a staggering 33,522 cases, amounting to Rs 4.7 trillion, remain pending in various courts and tribunals across the country.

In light of the massive backlog, Prime Minister Sharif instructed that urgent steps be taken to expedite the resolution of these pending cases. Additionally, he ordered a forensic audit of revenue-related cases to ensure that only legitimate and meritorious cases are pursued.

PM Sharif's firm stance against FBR officers filing weak cases is aimed at addressing the inefficiencies within the tax system and ensuring that only justified claims are taken forward, fostering a culture of accountability within the organization.
