The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is engaged in discussions with its opposition allies to explore ways to de-escalate political tensions with the military establishment and regain political ground for the party, including seeking relief for its jailed founding chairman, Imran Khan.
Efforts to Convince Imran Khan
According to informed sources, opposition alliance leaders, including Majlis-e-Wahdat Muslimeen (MWM) chief Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PMAP) chairman Mahmood Khan Achakzai, have been urged to persuade Imran Khan to adopt a conciliatory approach. The key focus is on reducing aggressive social media rhetoric and aligning with national efforts against terrorism.
Sources claim that Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, who is seeking permission to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail, was asked by PTI Chairman Barrister Gauhar Ali Khan and other senior party leaders to convince Khan to adopt a more pragmatic approach.
When contacted, Barrister Gauhar confirmed that discussions are ongoing with allies but declined to disclose details.
Divisions Within PTI
Despite PTI’s recent statements about launching a new phase of protests after Eid, internal divisions persist. Some senior leaders believe that past confrontational politics has not benefited the party or its leadership. They argue that mending ties with state institutions could provide PTI with a pathway back into mainstream politics.
A YouTuber with close links to PTI has claimed that Gauhar Ali Khan requested Raja Nasir Abbas and Achakzai to mediate, but both leaders declined to intervene.
Concerns Over Social Media Strategy
A significant concern among PTI leaders is the party’s aggressive social media strategy, which has fueled tensions with the military. Some believe that only Imran Khan can control this messaging and redirect PTI’s narrative towards a more strategic approach.
With Pakistan facing rising incidents of terrorism, some senior PTI figures argue that the party should align itself with national security priorities to improve its political standing.
A Shift in PTI’s Strategy?
While the future course of PTI’s politics remains uncertain, the party’s leadership appears divided between maintaining a hardline stance or adopting a reconciliatory approach. If Imran Khan chooses a softer tone, PTI could find itself in a better position for negotiations and political maneuvering in the coming months.
