POLITICS & POLICY MAKING
Prime Minister’s Advisor on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday defended the jail conditions of Imran Khan, founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), describing them as “A1” and stating that his medical treatment in custody has been excellent.
Speaking on Capital Talk, Sanaullah also criticized PTI leadership, including Sohail Afridi, for talking about street protests, labeling such statements as “foolish” and unnecessary during Ramadan.
Alleged Conspiracies and Sit-Ins
Rana Sanaullah questioned PTI’s preparation for its February 8 “traffic jam” call and sit-ins, suggesting that these actions could be part of an internal conspiracy against PTI. He claimed that PTI was offered to hold meetings at Sangjani instead of D-Chowk but allegedly refused.
He added that Mohsin Naqvi advised him directly not to go to D-Chowk, and that Imran Khan initially agreed but later withdrew, showing he does not desire to remain in jail longer than necessary.
“His meetings are not being used for politics or verbal abuse, so who will stop them?” Sanaullah said, emphasizing that the PTI founder wants justice for his cases, not favors.
Street Movement Criticism
Responding to Sohail Afridi’s announcement of a street movement, Sanaullah said no party discussion had taken place on this issue. He stressed that Imran Khan has authorized Allama Raja Nasir Abbas and Mahmood Khan Achakzai to lead any protests or negotiations.
He further stated that PTI has no political involvement from Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, who is only advocating for her brother’s release.
Context
The remarks come amid heightened political tension over Imran Khan’s detention, ongoing court cases, and PTI-led protests. Sanaullah’s statements appear aimed at countering PTI’s narrative of poor treatment in custody and discouraging street-level mobilization during Ramadan.
