Russia unleashed a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv and several other cities, killing at least three people and injuring dozens, Ukrainian officials reported.
Kyiv’s military administration confirmed that three victims were first responders who had rushed to the scene of one of the strikes, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said. The barrage caused significant damage to multi-storey residential buildings and energy infrastructure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin had earlier warned of retaliatory strikes after Ukraine’s drone attacks destroyed several Russian strategic bomber aircraft deep inside Russia. This message was reportedly conveyed via U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia deployed 407 drones — one of the largest recorded in a single assault — along with 45 cruise and ballistic missiles. The attack disrupted Kyiv’s metro system, damaging tracks between stations, and caused the state railway company to divert trains due to rail damage.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha condemned the strikes on civilians, tweeting that Russia “responded” to destroyed aircraft by attacking Ukrainian civilians.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported 49 injuries nationwide and called on Western allies to ramp up sanctions and pressure on Russia, emphasizing the urgency of decisive action. “If someone is not applying pressure and is giving the war more time to take lives – that is complicity and accountability,” he said.
Russian forces also targeted industrial and energy facilities in the western city of Ternopil, leaving parts of the city without power and causing fires that led authorities to advise residents to stay indoors due to toxic fumes. In the northwestern city of Lutsk, fifteen people were injured in strikes damaging homes, schools, and government buildings.
In a related development, Ukrainian forces launched preemptive strikes on Russian airbases in Saratov and Ryazan regions, damaging at least three fuel reservoirs. The attacks came after Ukrainian operatives recently destroyed some of Russia’s strategic bombers using quadrocopter drones concealed in wooden sheds — a bold operation marking a new phase in the ongoing conflict.
The intensifying conflict highlights the growing use of drone technology and the escalation of retaliatory strikes, with civilians increasingly caught in the crossfire.
