Saudi-Led Coalition Warns STC Against Escalation in Hadramout

Yemen’s Saudi-led coalition has warned the Southern Transitional Council (STC) that any military actions in Hadramout undermining de-escalation efforts will be met with a firm response to protect civilians, the Saudi state news agency reported on Saturday.

The statement by coalition spokesperson General Turki al-Malki came after Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council head, Rashad al-Alimi, requested immediate measures to safeguard civilians in Hadramout from violations by armed groups affiliated with the STC.

The STC, backed by the United Arab Emirates, ousted the Saudi-backed, internationally recognised government from Aden earlier this month and has since claimed extensive control over southern Yemen. On Friday, the group rejected a Saudi call to withdraw from areas seized in December, insisting it would maintain security over the eastern provinces of Hadramout and Mahra.

Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman also urged the STC on X to respond to mediation efforts, resolve disputes by consensus, and end the escalation. He stressed that forces should withdraw from camps in Hadramout and Mahra peacefully and hand them over to local authorities.

Prince Khalid highlighted that the southern issue must be addressed in any comprehensive political settlement through consensus, trust-building, and honouring commitments, warning against adventurism that serves the enemies of Yemenis.

The ongoing tensions reflect the fragile state of Yemen’s southern territories, where competing factions continue to challenge the internationally recognised government’s authority, raising concerns over civilian safety and regional stability.
