Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on IT and Telecom convened on Thursday at Parliament House to review Pakistan’s 5G auction policy, telecom expansion in rural areas, and ongoing internet service issues.
5G Auction Policy: Awaiting Government Approval
Officials from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) briefed the committee, stating that a policy directive from the government is necessary before proceeding with the 5G spectrum auction. They highlighted that while a 5G trial was approved in 2017, an advisory committee has been formed to monitor progress.
A consultant hired in November 2023 has submitted a report outlining spectrum planning. The officials noted that 5G requires additional spectrum, but key challenges—including market competition and infrastructure limitations—must be addressed.
While 5G services will not be immediately accessible to all users, the new spectrum will enhance 3G and 4G speeds, according to IT ministry officials.
Universal Service Fund (USF) Reports Progress in Rural Areas
The Universal Service Fund (USF) provided an update on telecom expansion in rural regions. Over the past three years, 63 projects were successfully completed, delivering essential connectivity to underserved areas.
However, Senator Humayun Mehmood raised concerns about service complaints in Balochistan. USF officials attributed interruptions to security issues, which have also hindered telecom projects in North and South Waziristan.
Internet Disruptions on Motorways
The committee chairperson questioned officials about persistent internet disruptions on highways. USF representatives assured that the PTA is actively working to resolve the issue, with improvement efforts already in progress.
As Pakistan moves toward 5G implementation, policymakers continue to grapple with spectrum allocation, security risks, and rural connectivity challenges.
