The Federal Bureau of Statistics has reported a significant surge in sugar prices across Pakistan, with several cities witnessing sharp increases within just one week.
In Karachi, the price of sugar jumped by Rs 20 per kilogram, reaching the country’s highest price of Rs 220 per kg, putting additional pressure on consumers. Hyderabad followed closely, where sugar prices rose by Rs 15, bringing the cost to Rs 215 per kg.
In Quetta, the price increased by Rs 2, reaching Rs 216 per kg, while Khuzdar recorded Rs 210 per kg and Larkana Rs 205 per kg. In the federal capital Islamabad and across Punjab, sugar is being sold at Rs 190 per kg, with Peshawar also at Rs 190 and Sukkur at Rs 195 per kg.
According to the Bureau of Statistics, the average sugar price nationwide increased by 37 paisa over the last week, raising the countrywide average to Rs 189.98 per kg, compared to Rs 189.61 per kg the previous week. This is a sharp increase from the same period last year, when the average sugar price was Rs 131.85 per kg.
The rising sugar prices are exacerbating the financial strain on households and contributing to broader inflationary pressures in the country, affecting the cost of living for millions of citizens. Economists have warned that continued price hikes in essential commodities like sugar may further strain household budgets and impact overall economic stability.
