Taxpayers Face Tech Hurdles as Income Tax Deadline Approaches

As the deadline for income tax return submissions on September 30 looms, taxpayers across the nation are encountering serious challenges. Many are grappling with slow internet speeds and technical difficulties related to the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) online portal, IRIS.

The pressure on the system has intensified as the deadline draws closer, resulting in the IRIS server crashing and leaving numerous individuals and businesses unable to submit their tax returns on time. This ongoing situation has raised alarms within the business community and among individual taxpayers, who are increasingly frustrated by the inability to meet their obligations.

Iftikhar Sheikh, President of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the FBR’s handling of the situation. "The FBR’s online return submission portal is not functioning properly, and taxpayers are struggling to file their returns,” Sheikh lamented. He urged the FBR to enhance the portal's capacity to alleviate the burdens on taxpayers and to prevent future system failures.

Furthermore, Sheikh suggested that, given the current technical difficulties, the FBR should consider extending the filing deadline by one month. “If the deadline is not extended, many members of the business community will be unable to submit their returns by September 30,” he cautioned.

The IRIS portal, intended to streamline the tax filing process, has faced criticism due to its frequent breakdowns and the added complications of slow internet speeds. With only a few days left until the deadline, taxpayers are hoping for prompt action from the FBR to resolve these pressing issues. The situation not only affects individual taxpayers but also poses a significant risk to the economic stability of the business community.

As the deadline approaches, it remains to be seen whether the FBR will take the necessary steps to address these concerns, ensuring that taxpayers can fulfill their obligations without undue stress.
