The teenage son of Justice Mohammed Asif of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) was remanded into police custody on Tuesday following a tragic accident that claimed the lives of two young women.
Judicial Magistrate Shaista Khan Kundi approved the remand after police requested custody to complete their investigation. The accident occurred late Monday night near the Pakistan National Council of Arts (PNCA), when a black SUV allegedly driven by the judge’s son struck two women riding a scooter. Both victims reportedly died on the spot.
According to the FIR lodged at Secretariat Police Station, the vehicle fled the scene immediately after the collision. Police traced the SUV through its registration number and took the suspect into custody after he was admitted to a private hospital for medical treatment. The vehicle has been impounded, and forensic samples have been collected.
The suspect faces charges under Sections 279 (rash driving), 322 (manslaughter), and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Pakistan Penal Code. The investigating officer told the court that further custody was required to complete verification of the suspect’s medical report, vehicle inspection, and eyewitness statements.
Authorities are also attempting to obtain CCTV footage and determine whether negligence or speeding was involved. The bodies of the deceased were shifted to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences for autopsy. Police have assured the families that the investigation will be conducted strictly on merit.
The case draws parallels to a 2022 incident in Islamabad, where an SUV allegedly driven by the daughter of a Lahore High Court judge killed two persons. That case, involving Shanzay Malik, saw the accused acquitted earlier this year, raising public concerns over accountability in high-profile judicial family cases.
This latest incident has sparked widespread attention and calls for a transparent investigation to ensure justice for the victims.
